TOP THREATS IN DESCHUTES COUNTY

Deschutes County is vulnerable to a variety of natural disasters. Wildfire is the No. 2 threat – especially for a wildland urban interface community such as Sunriver. Central Oregon is also at risk from winter storms (the region's No. 1 threat), earthquakes, wind storms, volcanic eruption and floods – conditions that could necessitate an emergency response.

Understanding the types of threats that can affect your community can also help you become better prepared.
Below is information and tools to be ready before and during an emergency.

Steps to be prepared before and during fire season

  • Register for emergency notifications.
  • Create defensible space around your home.
  • Make a list of your 5Ps (People, Pets, Pills, Photos, Papers).
  • Prepare a 72-hour "go" kit
  • Know alternate ways out of your neighborhood.
  • Know the evacuation plans for your family members in school, assisted living and childcare facilities.
  • Designate an out-of-area contact who can relay information.
  • Plan how you will transport your pets.
  • Keep the car fuel tank at least half full at all times.

If the Sunriver Community Needs to be Evacuated

Should you receive an emergency alert from Deschutes 911, an evacuation may be imminent. Each incident is unique and may require different evacuation routes. You may also be directed to a "green" safe zone such as a pasture or golf course or asked to "shelter in place."

This is the time to start monitoring various sources for updates about the emergency. This may include:

  • TV/radio announcements, including social media postings
  • social media posts by emergency services & law enforcement
  • emergency services websites
  • wildfire smartphone app such as Watch Duty
  • DO NOT CALL 911 for information about the incident

You do not have to wait until an evacuation level is given to leave. You are ultimately responsible for making the decisions for the safety of yourself and your family... it is OK to GO EARLY!

There may not be the time or resources to go door-to-door and notify everyone.

Follow Directions & Evacuation Signage

DO NOT ASSUME an exit route will be open and safe for travel as you may be driving into the danger zone. Each of Sunriver's circles has a sign directing vehicular traffic to Highway 97... law enforcement will designate the safest route(s) based on the type and direction of the threat.
