Amphitheater conceptual design contract awarded to Group Mackenzie of Bend Sunriver Owners Association (SROA) announced in December that Group Mackenzie, a multidisciplinary planning, architecture and engineering firm, and their designated design team of consultants, was selected to provide conceptual plans and construction cost estimates for aquatics facilities and other amenities at the Amphitheater site on Beaver Drive.
In November, after years of gathering data, receiving recommendations from strategic planning groups, commissioning professional studies and conducting member surveys, the SROA Board of Directors weighed the wealth of information available and determined that the best solution to Sunriver’s aging aquatics problem, (before it becomes a crisis situation) was development of the Amphitheater site on Beaver Drive.
Included in that decision was the directive to keep the ailing South pool open until a new facility is constructed, and to keep the North Pool open for the rest of its useful life.
New facilities will not be built at the Amphitheater site unless SROA members vote to do so. The board, knowing that they would need to present voters with a ballot measure that fully described the proposed development and its cost, also directed staff to initiate a Request for Proposal process for Amphitheater site facilities design and construction cost estimates.
According to SROA president Tom Ped, the decision to seek proposals for full development of Amphitheater site amenities was partly based on the belief that if the board presented Sunriver owners with just an aquatic facility, they would essentially disenfranchise SROA members by making this important decision for them. However, once the conceptual plans and itemized cost estimates are delivered, the board can determine (based on owner input during the next three months) what pieces to include in the summer 2010 ballot.
Ten teams submitted proposals and each one was evaluated by a leadership task force formed by the board. This task force will now act as the primary liaison between SROA and the design team through the initial three-month design process. The process will include owner workshops and online communication between the design team and SROA members who wish to provide suggestions and keep up with the project’s progress.
Group Mackenzie principal and architect, Bob Thompson, expressed appreciation for his firm’s selection as SROA’s design team and enthusiasm about the collaboration with association members, leadership and staff to craft facilities and amenities that fit the unique spirit, energy and character of this special place.
“Our team is looking forward to engaging the homeowners and getting their feedback at upcoming meetings. It will be absolutely critical for us to get a sense of their goals and vision for the project. Once we do that, we can work with the association to incorporate what we hear and craft a design reflective of what homeowners want,” Thompson said.
