Sunriver Sign Rules

"Signs, Signs, Everywhere are signs!"

Remember that early '70s rebellious song that included lyrics like the following: "Do this, don't do that. Can't you read the sign?"

That song reflects the discontent of being told what to do and what not to do that still applies today. In fact, contemporary society is more likely to question or challenge authority than it did in the '70s.

There are those who adamantly oppose signs of any kind and there are those who feel it is their right to display any sign they choose.

Unfortunately, signs are a necessary evil. Businesses are dependent on them. Every day we rely on signs to find our way, compare prices, obey the law and keep our behavior in check.

In Sunriver, we have directional, behavioral, traffic, advertising and special-event signs. The Design Committee rules provide for effective signage that meets the differing needs of various interests and legal obligations.

The Design Committee has the responsibility of balancing the need for signage with strict standards that make Sunriver unique. The governing documents establish the guiding principles upon which Sunriver was founded and which continue to guide the committee in its work. They also obligate owners to be familiar with the rules and regulations and to comply with them.

Granted, there are a ton of sign rules - especially for commercial signs. That's because there is a huge demand for signs and a fear that Sunriver would look like the Vegas strip if regulations didn't exist.

Signs must meet established criteria and be approved by the Design Committee prior to installation.

So before you install a sign without first receiving Design Committee approval, do what the guy in the song did when he answered a "help wanted" ad that read: "long haired freaky people need not apply." He tucked his hair up under his hat and went in to ask them "why?"

However, you don't need to alter your appearance to visit us. The SROA Community Development staff will be more than happy to answer your questions and help you get a sign that will make both you and the community happy, hair or no hair!
