The success and livability of any community can be interpreted by the quality and character of its parks, recreation opportunities and open space amenities. Since its dedication on June 29, 1968, the Sunriver community has developed as a wonderful resort community that is treasured by all visitors and residents.

As noted by Don McCallum at the opening day ceremonies on that special day, "Sunriver represents the right kind of development for Oregon. It wisely capitalizes on the exceptional land, water and scenic resources of the Central Oregon area."

It is imperative the development of the Amphitheater site is crafted in a manner that represents the quality and character of Sunriver and meets the needs of all park users. The Group Mackenzie team is committed to taking the vision of Sunriver and transforming that spirit into a community-based, environmentally sensitive and economically responsible recreation facility.

Our unique project team is balanced with local architects, a responsive multi-discipline firm and a national class aquatic designer that will create a concept that fits the character of the area, meets budget goals and fulfills the recreational wishes of all users.

Local knowledge
The project team includes hsr, a Bend-based architecture firm with civic, resort and commercial projects in Central Oregon and around the state. Our project team will include Bob Thompson and Chris Clemow, both long time Sunriver property owners, and R&H Construction of Bend. Their long-term local knowledge will be essential to capture the spirit and energy of Sunriver.

Through site visits and user interviews we will immerse ourselves in the project to thoroughly understand existing site areas, community character and unique conditions that will directly influence the design.

It will also be critical to completely understand the work completed to date. We have extensive experience bringing master plans into workable, yet compelling solutions that remain true to the original intent.

Aquatic design
The Group Mackenzie team also includes Water Technologies, a nationally recognized aquatic facility design firm founded on the belief that aquatic recreation completes communities and makes them a better place to live and play. Their solution-driven planning and design philosophy emphasizes that the most successful plans result from active community participation. Although they complete projects all over the country, each one is tailored for the individual community to which it belongs. They have extensive experience in the Pacific Northwest and understand the region and its special character.

We will bring a high level of energy and enthusiasm to this project. Group Mackenzie has significant experience working with and leading diverse groups of people and organizations involved with community improvement projects. We understand that for the Amphitheater project it will be critical to work with a variety of stakeholders to elicit input, facilitate productive discussions and achieve consensus.

Sustainable design
This is a special place that needs to be designed with utmost care in preserving and enhancing its natural character. There is a great opportunity to integrate tree preservation, storm water treatment and energy conservation into the spirit of the design. One of our firm's key competencies is the knowledge we have gained during the completion of many projects incorporating sustainable design practices. Our numerous Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professionals on the project team will look for ways to incorporate practical, yet compelling environmentally sound solutions.

Multi-discipline team
With landscape architecture, architecture, civil engineering and structural engineering all under the same roof we are able to quickly and efficiently explore a variety of solutions that address the various program requirements and design challenges throughout the duration of the project. This efficient structure provides our clients with savings - both in project costs and time. We will create a seamless line of communication with Sunriver to ensure an open flow of ideas and goals with all team members. The Group Mackenzie multi-discipline approach will facilitate an efficient management effort while allowing Water Technologies and hsr Architecture to focus on their special skills that will make this a unique place.
